In an unblinded study, the efficacy of a 1.33% betaine mouthwash was tested and found to improve symptoms of dry mouth induced by pharmaceuticals over the course of four weeks; the benefits were not additive with an intraoral device (mouthguard) despite the two being comparable in efficacy.
No placebo control, symptoms relative to baseline and 63% of persons reported benefit from treatment (7 ratings of beneficial, 12 of minor benefit, none of major benefit, 10 reporting no change, 1 worsening).

Twice daily brushing of a toothpaste containing 4% betaine by weight in persons with dry mouth symptoms appears to be able to reduce said symptoms as assessed by self-reported, with no apparent changes in the visual appearance of the mucosa or bacterial colonies. Efficacy was greater in those with worse symptoms and lower baseline salivation rates.

In subjects either with dry mouth symptoms or healthy controls, a toothpaste containing 4% betaine over the course of six weeks was noted to reduce dry mouth symptoms in persons with dry mouth (beneficially affecting 44% of persons, a level significantly greater than placebo toothpaste) and appeared to have its efficacy reduced in the presence of 1% sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).
